Below is a list of things I use a lot and recommend.

Mootools javascript framework

A widely documented and used framework that simplifies javascript extensively, making it a lot easier to perform complex javascript actions that work cross-browser. The difference between jquery and mootools is that jquery simplifies the DOM, whilst mootools simplifies javascript in general, making the two libraries slightly difficult to compare.

I use it for pretty much everything I do...

Have a play around with the demos and documentation.

Modx Revolution CMS

Modx Revolution was just announced, so I decided to give it a go, this is what I can tell you about it;

First off, Modx Revolution is a total rebuild of Modx Evolution, from the core up. So any sites running the old version needs some hours put in for them to work with the new cms.

As the Evo, it is still a developers cms, not a plug-and-play type system, which is exactly what I like about it.
The new version seems much more stable, better thought through and has an improved user interface, however it only comes with core functionality on install and plugins, or "snippets", are still few.

So, if you like coding your own plugins and just want a nice and solid core to build your site from,
you should definitely try it out.

Limbik Frequencies

Awesome ambient music radio station. On itunes under "ambient" or just keep their website open in your browser.

Perfect listening for work like programming, where vocals can be very distracting...

Tune in and zone out.

Dropbox online storage

Dropbox is a company that allows you to sync a folder on your computer to their external storage servers, basically making that folder identical on all your computers and at the same time keeping a backup on their servers.

Whenever I save something on my workstation, it's there on my laptop at home when I return from work. It's also pretty handy to have an off-site automatic backup of important files.

Remember security though and don't assume that your password or their encryption is watertight...

Get an account, it's free!

Coda by Panic

Coda is the only development software I use.
It is by far the best thought through, laid out and feature-rich coding program I've tried. Boasting features such as sftp, terminal, svn(!), splittable windows, code snippet library, preview, css tweaking tools, even ebooks.

I really recommend it! It makes work more fun.

Arduino microcontroller boards

A cheap and great way to get started in building electronics projects with programmable microcontrollers.

These little wizards can be used with anything from light-sensors to gps and lcd displays and have a huge community around them, so documentation and help is very easy to find.

They run a programming language called "wiring" which is in most respects identical to C and pretty easy to learn if you have some knowledge of scripting.

They can be programmed using the Arduino software and a USB cable.

You can get one from Sparkfun or Coolcomponents, and get software and tutorials from the Arduino website.

1 and 1 hosting

I host my sites on a 1 and 1 scalable cloud server, allowing me to vary the amount of memory, processor cores and storage capacity on the fly according to my current needs.

As I've never had any server downtime, find their prices reasonable and customer service helpful, I can recommend them.

Check out the cloud servers in particular.
